Steel Buildings in a Humid Climate

Metal building and pole barn insulation is some of the most practical spray foam work in Bay County. Steel shops, barns, garages, carports turned into workshops and storage buildings are common on the larger lots north of the bay and in the rural parts of the county. Bare steel heats up fast in the sun and radiates that heat inside. Then, on cool nights and mornings, warm humid air inside the building condenses on the cold metal and drips onto whatever is stored below. Closed-cell spray foam on the inside of the panels deals with both problems in one layer.

Why closed-cell for steel

Closed-cell foam bonds directly to the metal, seals the seams and fastener holes, and keeps humid air from ever touching the cold steel, which is what stops condensation. HomeGuide rates it at R-5 to R-7 per inch, so one to three inches gives a useful R-value without eating into the building's space. It also stiffens thin panels and quiets rain noise on a metal roof. Open-cell foam, fiberglass blankets and bubble wrap products cost less, but they let humid air reach the metal unless the vapor control is perfect, and in this climate that is hard to get right.

Planning the job

We measure the walls and roof, note the panel profile, purlin and girt spacing, doors, windows and anything mounted on the walls, and ask how you use the building. A climate-controlled shop or a building with living space needs more foam on the roof than a storage barn that only needs to stop dripping. If you plan to add a mini-split or a window unit, we size the foam to make that work. Foam left exposed in a building used for work may need a thermal or ignition barrier depending on the product and use, and we explain what applies.

Permits and use

A steel building used as a garage or barn and one being turned into an office, gym or apartment fall under different rules. If you are converting a building to living space, check with the building department before insulation goes in, because the energy and fire rules for occupied space are stricter. We can give you the product details your permit may need.

Other buildings we do

Shipping containers used as storage or workshops, detached garages, boat and RV covers being enclosed, and the steel roofs of open-sided buildings that drip on equipment. The same closed-cell approach works on all of them.

Metal Building & Pole Barn Insulation Questions

Will spray foam stop my metal building from sweating?

Closed-cell foam sprayed directly on the steel stops humid air from touching the cold metal, which is what causes the drip. It needs to cover the panels fully, including seams and fasteners.

How thick should foam be in a steel shop?

One to two inches of closed-cell is often enough to stop condensation in a storage building. An air-conditioned shop usually gets more on the roof. We set thickness based on how you use the space.

Can you foam a pole barn with wood posts?

Yes. We spray the steel skin between posts, girts and purlins. Wood in contact with the ground is left clear so it can be inspected.

Does foam make a metal roof quieter?

Yes, foam bonded to the panels deadens rain noise noticeably.
